Children play on the sand, voices carrying in the still air. Terns and gulls pass overhead. From a neighboring balcony, the murmur of conversation. Far out at sea, the low hum of a passing ship. As the sun sets, the beach empties, doors close, and the Dutch coast settles into evening.

Hamoa Beach, just outside Hāna on the eastern shore of Maui. A late morning in the tropics, the air thick and warm, the Pacific arriving in long, deliberate sets. Standing knee-deep in the water, the waves rise and break close, surging around the legs with a heavy, full-bodied roar — the sound of the ocean from inside it, all weight and motion. Then a few steps back onto the dark volcanic sand, and the world rearranges itself: the surf moves further off, softer now, breaking in long curls and hissing up the shore before drawing back through the grains. The wind moves through the palms above the beach, a dry rustle layered over the deeper voice of the sea. A bird calls once from the tree line. The waves keep coming, unhurried, each one a small arrival, folding into the next, into the warm green hush of the Hawaiian coast.

Xerokambos, on the eastern edge of Crete, where the island runs out of road and the Libyan Sea begins. Early morning, the light still pale and unhurried, the air carrying salt and the dry scent of thyme from the hills behind. The sea arrives in long, low pulses, breaking close to the shore and unfurling across the sand in thin sheets of white. The tide is on the turn, and the rhythm of the waves is quietly rewriting itself — a longer wait, then a closer break, then two arriving almost on top of each other, the sea momentarily forgetting its own count. Pebbles roll and click in the backwash, a small percussion underneath the larger breath of the water. Somewhere out beyond sight, a gull. The wind barely stirs. The horizon is empty. The Aegean and the Libyan trade something across this shore, again and again, while the morning slowly opens around it.

Punta Raza, Nayarit, Mexico. Morning at the edge of the waves. The Pacific breaks heavy and close, foam rushing up the sand and pulling back. A pelican passes overhead, a single low call. Then the ocean again, breaking and receding into the warm morning.

Moonstone Beach, California. A late afternoon in winter, the light low and silvered over the water. Waves arrive in long, unhurried rolls, breaking somewhere out beyond the shore and then drawing in close, hissing across the smooth pebbles as they retreat — a sound like rain falling in reverse, like something being slowly unspooled. Gulls call overhead, sharp and far, their cries scattered by the wind. Cormorants pass low over the surf without a sound. A gust rises, rattling the dry grasses on the bluff, then settles. The pebbles shift and click beneath each receding wave, a thousand small stones turning over and over. Somewhere down the beach, a dog barks once. The ocean breathes in, breathes out, and keeps on breathing, indifferent and steady, into the dimming afternoon.

Donghe Township, on the eastern coast of Taitung, Taiwan. The Pacific opens wide here, and the waves arrive with weight, breaking long and full against the shore. The sound surrounds — the deep roll of water moving in, the heavy collapse of each break, the long hiss as it pulls back across the sand and stones. Stones turning in the backwash, a low clatter beneath the surge. The wind off the sea, steady and salt-heavy. No road, no voices. Just the ocean meeting the edge of the island, again and again, the cliffs of the coast holding the sound in close. The horizon is vast and uninterrupted. The Pacific keeps speaking into the morning, and there is nothing else to listen to.
