Vlissingen, on the coast of Zeeland, Netherlands. A spring evening at low tide. The North Sea is calm, the wind almost gone, the waves washing in soft and friendly. Children play on the sand, voices carrying in the still air. Terns and gulls pass overhead. From a neighboring balcony, the murmur of conversation. Far out at sea, the low hum of a passing ship. As the sun sets, the beach empties, doors close, and the Dutch coast settles into evening. BACK

Vlissingen, Zeeland – Netherlands

Vlissingen, on the coast of Zeeland in the Netherlands. A spring evening at low tide, recorded from a beach-hut balcony a hundred meters from the shore. The North Sea is calm, the wind almost gone, and the waves arrive gently — a soft, friendly wash in the background, never insistent. People are still out on the sand, the faint sound of children playing, voices carrying easily in the still air. Arctic terns and gulls cross overhead, calling now and then. From neighboring balconies, the occasional murmur of conversation. Somewhere far out at sea, the deep low hum of a passing ship. As the sun begins to set, the beach slowly empties. Voices thin out, doors close. The wind off the land barely stirs. The sea keeps its quiet rhythm, and the Dutch coast settles into evening.
