Donghe Township, on the eastern coast of Taitung, Taiwan. The Pacific opens wide here, and the waves arrive with weight, breaking long and full against the shore. The sound surrounds — the deep roll of water moving in, the heavy collapse of each break, the long hiss as it pulls back across the sand and stones. Stones turning in the backwash, a low clatter beneath the surge. The wind off the sea, steady and salt-heavy. No road, no voices. Just the ocean meeting the edge of the island, again and again, the cliffs of the coast holding the sound in close. The horizon is vast and uninterrupted. The Pacific keeps speaking into the morning, and there is nothing else to listen to. BACK
