Rio Acima, a small town in the hills of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Summer night in the countryside. It begins with light rain on the vegetation, on the roof, on the earth. Then the thunder comes — not the rolling coastal kind, but something bigger and closer, the kind that comes down from the hills and reverberates across the valley. This is different from tropical coastal rain. The countryside absorbs it differently. The night insects continue. A dog barks once, far away. The rain intensifies, and then pulls back, and then intensifies again. Thirty minutes of countryside Brazilian night. Recorded with Schoeps CCM4 microphones in ORTF configuration by felix.blume.

Crickets fill the dark — several kinds, layered and uneven, some sharp, some soft, a small chorus held together by the warmth still rising from the pavement. Far off, a car passes on a wider road, its hum swelling and thinning into nothing. The crickets return to themselves. A bicycle drifts by, unseen. Somewhere a window is open. The night breathes, and keeps breathing.

Vlissingen, on the coast of Zeeland, Netherlands. A spring evening at low tide. The North Sea is calm, the wind almost gone, the waves washing in soft and friendly. Children play on the sand, voices carrying in the still air. Terns and gulls pass overhead. From a neighboring balcony, the murmur of conversation. Far out at sea, the low hum of a passing ship. As the sun sets, the beach empties, doors close, and the Dutch coast settles into evening.

Haarsteeg, North Brabant, somewhere between Hedikhuizen and the village proper. Easter weekend, and the polder has thrown its doors open to spring. The sky is wide and Dutch — the kind of sky that takes up most of the world here — and the wind moves through in soft, irregular pulses, brushing the microphone now and then like a curious animal. Far off, the church bells of Vlijmen ring out across the fields, slow and unhurried, holiday bells with nowhere to be. Birds scatter their voices through the air, a chorus thinned out by distance: a finch here, a blackbird there, and somewhere among them, a cuckoo, repeating its small two-note miracle into the afternoon. A public bench sits just out of frame, and cyclists keep arriving — the country has more bicycles than people and today it shows — pausing to rest, trading bits of conversation that drift in and out of earshot, Dutch vowels rolling soft across the grass. A bell rings as someone passes. A moped buzzes through, briefly indignant. Then the polder reclaims itself: wind, birds, bells, the faint hum of a country at ease. Lie back in the grass, close your eyes, and you are already there.
